In the quest to attain interstellar civilization status, humanity is set on a mission to harness the solar system’s energy by constructing a monumental structure, the solar sphere. As a captain, you are employed by the colossal interstellar corporation to spearhead the construction of this megastructure. However, this voyage is not a solitary endeavor. Other captains, employed by the same corporation, are in a race to accomplish this herculean task to claim enormous rewards and prestige. Amidst this competitive space lurks the resistance, a group vehemently opposed to the sphere’s construction, posing a grave threat to humanity’s ambitious leap. The corporation’s mandate rings loud – the sphere’s construction is paramount, and the rebels are to be neutralized without a second thought.

The essence of the game revolves around racing against your fellow captains to amass resources, recruit adept crew members, confront the resistance, and ultimately lead in building the solar sphere. The victor is the player collecting the most points at the game’s finale.
🚀 Solar Sphere’s gameplay unfolds over a series of rounds, each encompassing four phases – dock, deploy, battle, and recover. The curtain falls on the game either after the 6th round or at the round’s conclusion where the final hex of the sphere is built, whichever transpires first.
🌌 In the dock phase, all players roll three ship dice, assigning them to docking ports within their command centre. Turn order is determined by the sum of face values on these dice, with the highest total securing the pole position. A morale bonus is derived based on the dice configuration in the docking ports, propelling players ahead on the morale track.
🌠 Transitioning to the deploy phase, players take turns based on the established order. A critical choice awaits every captain – to accept a potentially valuable yet morale-draining kickback from the corporation. Following this, they deploy a ship die to explore a location. Various locations offer different actions and a possibility to boost the outcome if a satellite drone is deployed. Actions range from resource acquisition at the asteroid belt, drone fabrication, salvaging drones, to hiring crew members at the crew station. The climax of this phase is the endeavor to build the sphere at the solar sphere location, which is governed by a dice value and resource availability.
⚔️ The battle phase escalates the gameplay as players engage with the resistance fleet. Players deploy drones and expend crystals to attack resistance ships. The success or failure of these attacks is contingent on the cumulative power of deployed drones against the resistance value of the targeted ships. Successful attacks reap bonuses and claim resistance ship cards, whereas failed assaults carry morale losses.
🔄 Lastly, the recover phase sets the stage for ensuing rounds. Players retrieve their ship dice, draw new resistance ships, refresh their crew members, and update the crew display. This cycle of strategic maneuvers and encounters continues until the destined end of the game.
🏁 The game’s end follows either the completion of the 6th round or the construction of the final sphere hex. Post-battle phase, players tally their scores considering various criteria, including the construction of sphere hexes, faction allegiances, and more.
From the minds of designers Ayden Lowther and Simon Milburn, and beautifully illustrated by Igor Ershov and Elias Stern, Solar Sphere made its debut in 2022, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign by Dranda Games. Intended for 1 to 4 players aged 10 and above, each game session offers 60 to 90 minutes of intriguing interstellar strategy.
🎲 The game prominently features dice placement and set collection mechanics — a blend that’s approachable for newcomers and veterans alike. With a comprehensive rulebook in tow, players can immerse themselves in the world of Solar Sphere, navigating the intricacies of its mechanics with ease. The heart of the game sees players racing to harness solar energy by building the coveted Solar Sphere. Competitions intensify as players vie for prime locations to avoid drone exhaustion, recruit skilled crew members, and engage with the formidable Resistance.
💡 Morale management stands out as an essential game element, pushing players to make thoughtful choices. The option to accept a morale-draining kickback can give players a boost, but it does make some locations less attractive, perhaps tipping the scales too much in favor of these kickbacks. Another essential part is the encounters with the Resistance Fleet. These battles inject a good dose of tension and unpredictability into the game, with players facing the potential for significant gains or losses.
🔍 While the mechanics are designed for smooth gameplay, first-timers might experience a gentle learning curve. The sheer variety of locations, actions, and strategy layers can make initial plays a tad longer, possibly leading some to deliberate extensively over each move. Thus, though the game indicates a 60-90 minute duration, sessions with maximum players might occasionally exceed that.
🏆 However, with each subsequent play, players can appreciate Solar Sphere’s multifaceted nature. Numerous scoring avenues, from meticulous Sphere construction to aligning with diverse factions, afford players a range of victory paths. The Sphere scoring card and the faction mechanism, intertwined with multiple game actions, deepen the strategic considerations, rewarding players for diversified faction icon collections.
⏳ Solar Sphere’s adaptability is commendable. Whether concluding after six rounds or upon Sphere completion, every game brings forth novel challenges and tactics. This versatility, along with the game’s innate variability, guarantees robust replayability, ensuring players encounter unique twists in every session.
💭 Solar Sphere elegantly balances being a streamlined yet richly decision-driven dice placement game. Its components are of high quality, and the theme of interstellar construction is woven seamlessly into its gameplay mechanics. If you’re seeking a blend of strategic depth and intuitive gameplay, this game is an excellent choice.
