Every round in Heroes of Xhandar revolves around tricks, where players aim to play the card with the highest trick value. Unlike many trick-taking games, players aren’t bound by color, granting them the freedom to choose any card from their hand. Some of these cards, when played, trigger an immediate effect, bringing unexpected twists to each trick. The victor of each trick is the player with the highest value card, who transfers the won cards to their pocket zone. But while accumulating cards is essential, the real challenge lies in strategically choosing two cards from the pocket zone to move to the stash by round’s end.
💎 While each hero ventures to gather diamonds, the specific diamonds they seek align with their unique victory conditions. Each hero remains a mystery to others until a player reveals it. Unveiling a hero activates two distinct abilities: a reveal ability, which can be triggered immediately upon disclosure, and either a spontaneous ability, usable once at any chosen time, or a static ability, effective from the moment of the hero’s unveiling until the game’s conclusion.
🎖 The Hero Mode introduces another dimension of complexity. Here, heroes aren’t just cards but tangible miniatures, navigating lanes on the board. Players can challenge opponents to duels, moving their hero forward on the lane if victorious. Each step on this lane can also trigger unique abilities, shaping a player’s approach.
🤝 The game accommodates varying numbers of players, with specific rules for two-player duels, free-for-all matches for up to six players, and four-player team confrontations. Coordination with a partner in team play can open avenues for shared victory, as both members aim to fulfill their heroes’ requirements.
🔮 Lastly, Heroes of Xhandar offers distinct modes like drafting, where hands are built from communal cards, and deck construction, where participants craft unique decks while adhering to specific guidelines.

Designed by Florian Fiedler, Heroes of Xhandar is a dynamic game that caters to 2-6 players and wraps up within 30-45 minutes. The game shines in its ability to cater to small groups and larger assemblies, perfect for cozy meets or grand game evenings.
🎨 At its heart, this is a trick-taking game, but don’t be mistaken — it’s not the conventional kind. Heroes of Xhandar offers a unique spin on the traditional trick-taking genre. Without a color-binding rule in place, players have the freedom to play any color during tricks. Furthermore, instant card effects and varied hero abilities keep every player on their toes. These innovations and unique victory conditions transform this game into a distinct experience that diverges from classic trick-taking games. It’s truly trick-taking with a twist!
🌟 Each hero in the game comes with unique abilities, providing both depth and strategy to every move. A key decision players will face is determining the optimal moment to unveil their hero’s identity and harness their power. This decision-making, combined with the heroes’ balanced win conditions, ensures that every game feels fresh, making replays an enticing proposition.
➕ For those fond of drafting and deck construction, even more depth awaits. The option to draft cards or construct personalized decks introduces another layer of complexity, offering a richer experience. Additionally, the 2v2 mode stands out, paving the way for cooperative team strategies.
✨ Visually, the game is a treat. The artwork is impressive, lending an atmospheric vibe that immerses players in the world of Xhandar. With meticulous attention to detail and vibrant illustrations, the art brings the game’s lore and characters to life. The game introduces brick miniatures in its hero mode, a feature that undoubtedly catches one’s attention. Not only do they enhance tactile engagement, but they also offer a visual feast. Assembling them is a breeze, and their novelty is undeniable, as I’ve never encountered similar components in other games. The creators have teased the inclusion of beautifully designed playmats, which will undoubtedly enhance the gaming ambiance and provide a structured play area.
