Who would’ve thought it would come to this? Potatoes and tomatoes, once peacefully coexisting on our dinner plates, are now locked in the culinary clash of the century. Is the baked potato truly the king of comfort food, or does the baked tomato deserve a spot in the hall of fame? Things have gotten so heated that spies have infiltrated both camps, scheming and sabotaging like veggie James Bonds. But here’s the twist: no one really knows who’s rooting for potatoes, who’s loyal to tomatoes, and who’s just there for the chaos. Trust no one, except maybe the carrots.

Gameplay Overview
In Potato Tomato, you’ll find yourself embroiled in this high-stakes veggie standoff, where secrecy and deception reign supreme. Each player begins the game with five hidden character cards that determine whether they’re team Potato or team Tomato. The majority card type in your hand defines your allegiance, but the catch? Only you know what’s in front of you… for now.
When it’s your turn, the fun begins as you shuffle the action deck and start revealing cards one by one. It’s a risky game of push-your-luck: you can draw as many cards as you like, but turn over three cards of the same color and, bam, you’re burned. This means you’ll be stuck with three burn tokens and miss your chance to take action that round. If you play it safe and stop drawing before disaster strikes, you’ll get to activate the cards you revealed, unleashing their chaos.
Action cards bring all kinds of mischief to the table: you can peek at an opponent’s hidden cards, swap cards between players, or even hand out burn tokens like they’re spicy chili flakes. Got too many burn tokens? You’ll have to flip one of your own character cards, revealing a piece of your identity to everyone. If one poor soul ends up revealing all five of their cards, their cover is blown and their entire team loses the game. Talk about pressure!

Our Thoughts
Potato Tomato might seem like a simple game at first glance, but beneath its charming veggie theme is a recipe for unpredictable fun. The rules are easy to learn, making it a great choice for game nights with both seasoned players and newcomers. The push-your-luck mechanic keeps everyone on edge, especially when the rest of the table starts egging you on to “just draw one more card!” (Spoiler: they want you to burn.)
The real star of the show, though, is the social deduction aspect. With players constantly peeking at cards, swapping them, and bluffing their way through conversations, it doesn’t take long for the table to descend into chaos. You might start thinking you know who your allies are, but after a few well-timed swaps, all bets are off. By the time someone flips their last card, you’ll barely remember which side you were on in the first place.
For an extra twist, the game includes neutral veggie and fruit cards. If you end up with a majority of these wildcards, you’re Switzerland: neutral and loving it.

The best part of Potato Tomato isn’t just the clever mechanics or the sneaky strategies. It’s the sheer joy of interacting with other players. Whether you’re trying to bluff your way out of suspicion, lure your opponents into burning themselves, or casually planting doubt in someone’s mind, the game thrives on those moments of social tension. Every action can feel like a mini-drama, and a single card swap can flip the entire game on its head. It’s fast-paced, hilariously chaotic, and brimming with opportunities for memorable moments.
Oh, and one pro tip: never underestimate a potato or tomato with a secret agenda. They may look harmless, but they’re always cooking up trouble.
