Initiating the game begins with shuffling the entire deck of cards. Six cards are then laid out face-up in the center of the table, establishing the open display. Each player receives a hand of six cards. The leftover cards are stacked at the center, creating a draw pile. Additionally, an area is set aside for discarded cards. In front of every participant, there’s space designated for a personal collection, which can hold six cards.
🔄 Players proceed in a clockwise manner, each taking their turn. During a player’s turn, they have a few options to consider. They can choose to split a card from their hand, place it in the discard pile, and then select sets of two or more cards from the open display with a combined value equal to the discarded card. Alternatively, players might combine, discarding two to six cards from their hand, ensuring their combined value doesn’t exceed six. They then collect cards from the open display that match the combined value of the cards they’ve just discarded. If a player doesn’t want to split or combine, they can place a card from their hand onto the open display and then draw two more cards to refill their hand.
🗃️ As an additional option, a player might stash cards. In this move, a player selects all cards of a particular value from their hand. If the number of those cards matches or exceeds the card’s value, one gets added to their collection, while the rest join the discard pile.
🔄 After a player has taken their primary action and possibly stashed some cards, they ensure that the open display maintains six cards by drawing from the draw pile. If the display accumulates ten cards at any point, all of them are discarded, and six new ones replace them. A special rule comes into play if a player exhausts their hand by the end of their turn: every participant must discard their cards and draw six new ones. A player is declared the winner when the cards in their collection total 21 points or more.
🔀 Certain modifications can be made for those seeking a more straightforward or quicker experience. One can eliminate all cards with a value of six, and the winning condition changes to collecting one card of every value ranging from 1 to 5.
🚶♂️ Quibbles also offers a mode for solo play. Players follow the standard rules, but before refilling the open display, the leftmost card moves to a penalty pile, and any matching value cards in the display get discarded. The game concludes per regular rules, but the objective also includes keeping the penalty pile’s value as low as possible.

Quibbles is a card game designed by Michiel de Wit and published by Gam’inBIZ. Suitable for 1-5 players aged eight and up, it promises a playtime of between 15 to 20 minutes. From personal experience, it shines brightest with 3 or 4 players.
🎨 Diving into the components and artwork, it’s hard not to be charmed by the quibbles. They are an array of colorful, endearing characters. Each of the 132 cards showcases a unique quibble, each flaunting its own distinct expression. This means that even cards of the same value carry a different quibble, turning a simple deck check into an amusing experience. The illustrations, crafted by artists Roland MacDonald and Andrew Serbu, infuse the game with a light-hearted spirit. Complementing its breezy playstyle, the game also offers portability, snugly fitting into a compact box which, notably, has different cover versions.
📚 With minimal rules to grasp, explaining Quibbles to newcomers is a breeze. It’s particularly family-friendly, allowing younger kids not only to enjoy but also to brush up on their math skills in a fun context. Adults aren’t left out of the fun; Quibbles doubles as a swift filler game, making it versatile across various age groups.
🃏 Quibbles offers an engaging dynamic. Players aim to use cards from their hand to collect those laid out in the center, keeping both low and high-numbered cards in mind. While the high numbers help players reach their goal of 21 points, the low ones are crucial for crafting combinations. The game subtly urges players to be observant, as there’s a continuous tug of war over cards, especially with the possibility of a player taking away a desired card just before your turn. Furthermore, when a player depletes their hand, all players must discard their cards and draw six new ones, which can significantly disrupt their plans.
💭 Quibbles might not be the heaviest game on the shelf, but it certainly packs a punch in the fun department. It strikes a balance, offering just the right sprinkle of luck amidst its strategies. It’s ideal for families looking to relax after a bustling day or groups searching for a lighter game to wrap up a game night. The game achieves its purpose splendidly: a brisk and entertaining play session.
