In the year 2055, a group of entrepreneurs envisioned and embarked upon the creation of Neotopia, the most advanced city on Earth. With an emphasis on sustainability and harmony between humans and nature, Neotopia thrives on a balanced relationship between its three main regions. This game allows players to step into the shoes of these entrepreneurs, aiming to build and innovate in these regions using elements produced in the game’s factories.

Neotopia unfolds over a set number of rounds, determined by the number of players. On their turn, players must perform exactly three actions, choosing from the following two options: they can choose to draw a project card, either from the available offer or directly from the deck, to add to their hand. Alternatively, they might opt to move an element from a factory to an adjacent region, placing it next to a previously laid element.
🏭 When a factory depletes, it’s promptly refilled with elements from the central production tile. After refilling, the tile is flipped to unveil four new elements essential for upcoming rounds. As the final production tile comes into play, the game’s conclusion draws near.
🔍 As the game progresses, players move elements to craft patterns within the regions. If a pattern matches a card in a player’s hand and is distinct from the most recent card built in that region, they can establish that project, accruing points for that specific region.
🌆 During gameplay, players can earn bonus tokens either by placing an element over a bonus token in a region or by advancing their score marker on the game’s score track. Players can strategically use these bonuses as an extra action during their turn, but only one can be utilized per round.
🏁 As the game approaches its finale with the reveal of the last production tile, players prepare for one last round before diving into the final scoring. In this concluding phase, players add up points from their top two scoring regions, then multiply their lowest region’s points by three. Unused bonus tokens further boost their total. The player achieving the highest score emerges as the victor, deftly navigating the challenges and opportunities of building in Neotopia.

Neotopia, developed by designers Orlando Sá and André Santos, offers players a journey into a thoughtfully designed futuristic world. Intended for 2-4 players aged eight and above, the game suggests a playing time of 60 minutes. The visual essence of the game is enhanced by Tiago Lobo Pimentel, whose artistry marries modern city designs with dynamic characters. While the cards are visually engaging, some might find the thematic layer a bit thin. Highlighting the quality of Neotopia are its game pieces, especially the element tokens marked with symbols, set against a backdrop of rich, vibrant colors.
📖 The rulebook is impressively user-friendly. It breaks down the game mechanics into easy-to-digest sections supported by illustrations and examples. This efficient design means players can grasp the rules and play without delay.
🧩 Regarding gameplay, Neotopia blends pattern building with tile placement, introducing a unique scoring system. Players must strategize across three distinct regions, mainly focusing on their lowest-scoring area since those points will be tripled. Success in Neotopia hinges on this balance. While the game mechanics offer a fresh perspective, it might face limitations in replayability, as sessions tend to have a consistent feel. Additionally, the tactical nature of the game requires in-the-moment decision-making, which can sometimes slow the pace.
🌱 Interaction between players is a defining feature of Neotopia. Decisions on token placement can either be beneficial or act as hindrances to others. Such dynamics ensure players stay alert, adjusting their strategies based on the ever-changing game state and their competitors’ moves. The game leans more towards strategy than luck, urging players to adapt continually based on the game’s progression and rival strategies.
💭At its heart, Neotopia emphasizes strategy and adaptability. It may not revolutionize its category, but it certainly stands out with its refined artwork and clear-cut rules. Those who appreciate a mix of abstract strategy and light puzzling might find Neotopia a fitting choice.
