In the board game Fractured Sky, players become leaders of different kingdoms, all racing to collect pieces of stars that have fallen from the sky. As the saying goes, a falling star can grant a wish, but only one wish will be granted. The challenge is to collect the most star shards before the final star falls at the end of the fifth round. Who will gather enough shards to make their wish?

How the Game Works
Players send their troops to different islands within the realm to find shards from these fallen stars. The game is played over five rounds, and the player who has collected the most shards by the end wins the right to make a wish for their kingdom.
Player Actions
During a turn, players can choose from one of three actions. The first action is to deploy an airship to strengthen troop numbers on the islands. This involves secretly choosing a magnetic disc, numbered to represent troops, and placing it under the airship miniature. The total number on the discs for all three airships cannot be more than ten, so careful planning is essential. Once a player places their third airship, they end their turn for that round and choose their position on the player order track for the next round.
The second possible action is building structures: markets, fortresses, and skimmers, each affecting the game differently. Markets, built next to islands, bring extra resources when connected to islands with troops. Fortresses increase the military strength on their islands. Skimmers, placed directly on islands, boost troop strength but are removed at the end of the round.
The third action focuses on scouting. At the start of each round, one shard’s landing spot is known, but there are also hidden shards, one to five depending on the round, placed randomly across the islands. Players can scout these hidden cards to decide where to send their troops. They can also peek at the objective cards for the end of the round, which helps them plan better for what’s coming next.
Ending a Round and Scoring
At the end of each round, the objective card for that round is revealed, along with the locations of the hidden shards and the hidden troop strengths. The player who best meets the conditions of the objective card wins a star shard. Then, at each location, the game calculates which player has the strongest troop presence, taking into account any fortresses. The strongest player wins the star shard from that location, if available. If not, they collect both resources produced by that island. The second-strongest player gets resources too, depending on whether a shard was available or not, and so on. Players with markets also gain an additional resource for having troops on adjacent islands.
Winning the Game
After five rounds, the game concludes. The player who has collected the most star shards is declared the winner and gets to make a wish for their kingdom.

A Closer Look at Fractured Sky
Fractured Sky is a board game designed by Max Anderson, Zac Dixon, and Austin Harrison, suitable for one to five players. It’s recommended for ages 14 and up, but in our experience, players as young as 12 can also enjoy it. The game first gained attention through a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2023, launched by publisher IV Studio. It’s now back on Kickstarter with a special campaign featuring a reprint and an expansion.
Game Design and Accessibility
The game strikes a balance, being engaging enough for family play while also appealing to more seasoned gamers. The rulebook is straightforward and well-structured, which helps avoid any confusion during play. The game components are particularly impressive, making it one of the highest quality board games in terms of production that we’ve encountered.
We reviewed the Super-Deluxe Version provided by the publisher, which truly lives up to its name with 90 intricately painted miniatures, each unique to their faction. The player boards are attractive and functional, and the game includes innovative screen-printed magnetic tokens and lenticular cards that enhance the visual experience. The thoughtful design extends to a storage insert that not only helps keep everything organized but also simplifies setup and cleanup.

Playing the Game
Fractured Sky blends area control, deduction, hidden bidding, and a hint of bluffing. Players have 12 magnetic tokens, ranging in value from 0 to 10, to use in their strategy. The tokens for values 1 and 10 are colored differently, and players use them to try to outwit one another and deduce each other’s strategies. The deduction element comes from scouting hidden locations for starfall. This will reward players with resources but will also grant the opponents with information in the meantime. When taking one of the two resources on the card, players place one of their cubes, disclosing one of the resources the hidden location produces. This way, the opponent can start deducing where the star shard will drop at the end of the round resolution.
The hidden cards determine the locations of the shards randomly in each round, and the game makes it possible, as one of the three main actions, to actually scout these cards. Knowledge is power, and it can be one of the ways to play, so you’ll be certain where to place the ships to make a chance to win the shards. Players can also focus on collecting resources, peeking at objective cards to align their strategies, building fortresses for defense and influence, or trying to control valuable multi-island connected locations. The choice of strategy can be crucial, as most players will find a balanced approach between these options to be most effective.

Scalability and Play Experience
The game adjusts well to different numbers of players. For smaller games, AI opponents can be introduced to maintain the competitiveness necessary for majority control mechanics. With four or five players, the game expands by using the reverse side of the board which includes extra islands and more objective cards.
Final Thoughts
Playing Fractured Sky was both a visual treat and a mentally engaging experience. The game challenges players to think ahead, balance their strategies, and sometimes bluff with their colorful tokens to mislead opponents about their intentions. Each game session feels fresh and requires new tactics, keeping the game exciting and replayable. For those looking for a board game that’s as enjoyable to look at as it is to play, Fractured Sky is definitely worth giving a try.
