Setting the Stage: How to Play Maps of Misterra
The journey unfolds over a series of rounds, which persist until the island’s expanse is fully mapped. Throughout this venture, participants engage in two actions per turn, emblematic of a day’s worth of exploration divided into morning and afternoon sessions. These actions include moving across the terrain and selecting a sketch card, utilized either to document discoveries or to stake a claim over a region.
The essence of the game lies in meticulously reconstructing the island on your personal parchment board, all the while striving to achieve your individual objectives.
Upon selecting a sketch card, you’re tasked with placing it on your parchment in such a manner that the depicted terrain aligns with your current viewpoint—after all, you can only sketch what’s within your line of sight. If the terrain illustrated on the card is absent from the corresponding square on the communal board, a provisional terrain tile of that type is placed or exchanged with an existing provisional tile. Once a provisional tile is selected for a second time by any player, it’s flipped to its confirmed side, solidifying its presence on the board without the possibility of further changes.
The terrain variety influences your journey significantly, offering advantages or challenges depending on the type: elevated vistas from mountains broaden your view, dense forests limit visibility, and traversing the steppe accelerates your movement.
Alternatively, players may opt to deploy one of their claim markers, forgoing the sketch card. This action involves placing the marker on the communal board, with end-of-game points awarded for each contiguous tile of the same terrain type.
As the game concludes, scores are allocated based on the completeness and accuracy of your parchment board relative to the island, the territories you’ve claimed, and the fulfillment of your personal objectives. The mapmaker with the highest score is declared the most skilled cartographer, having masterfully charted the enigmatic isle of Misterra.

Unboxing Misterra
Maps of Misterra is a game that invites 1-4 players, aged 10 and up, to dive into about 45-60 minutes of exploring and mapping a mystical island. Created by Mathieu Bossu, Thomas Cariate, and Timothée Decroix, with artwork by Stanislas Puech, this game sets the stage for an adventurous family evening.
Our review copy, kindly provided by the publisher Sit Down!, came with rulebooks in English, French, and Dutch. The rulebook itself is a breeze to navigate, packed with helpful images and examples. It offers a clear run-through of the goal cards, rules for solitaire play, and includes a play aid for beginners. However, you’ll find the game’s mechanics straightforward enough that the play aid quickly becomes an optional tool rather than a necessity.
In terms of the game’s components, Maps of Misterra offers a neat package. The highlight for us was the wooden meeples, each uniquely shaped for different players, adding a charming touch to the game. With sturdy cardboard and linen-finished cards, the game doesn’t shout luxury but certainly delivers quality and durability, ensuring many game nights to come.

Gameplay and Interaction
The gameplay is where Maps of Misterra shines as a family-friendly title. It cleverly combines individual strategy on your parchment board with the possibility of influencing others’ plans. The twist of changing hazy terrain tiles keeps everyone on their toes, making for an interactive and engaging session.
Navigating the game involves a mix of strategic planning and adaptability, especially with the sketch cards and terrain types influencing your moves. Matching your personal board with the main island, while also keeping an eye on your goal cards, provides a satisfying challenge. Sometimes, you might even find that focusing on your goal cards offers a better path to victory than a perfect match with the main island.
Final Thoughts
Maps of Misterra lands as an entertaining option for family game night, blending challenge and fun in equal measure. The game’s design encourages players to think strategically while also leaving room for light-hearted competition. Its mix of detailed components and vibrant artwork complements the engaging gameplay, making it a game that’s easy to pick up but challenging to master. Maps of Misterra is a thoughtful choice for those looking to add a dash of adventure to their game collection, without needing to navigate the complexities often found in more competitive board games.
