As players take their turn, they roll a dice to navigate an airship across Havalandi’s triangular landscape, which is segmented into various zones. The direction of the arrows on the ship determines the two lines of sight for placing your balloon. Strategic placement is key; players aim to cluster their balloons, gaining points for expanding groups in the same area and for launching a diverse fleet across different zones, always including a path area to make the launch possible.
🏞️ Scattered across the terrain are pavilions, which serve as additional point sources. These pavilions vary in their point value based on the game’s mode; Havalandi’s board is dual-sided, offering varied layouts and slightly different pavilion rules.

Havalandi, designed by the renowned Reiner Knizia and published by Edition Spielwiese, offers an engaging family gaming experience for 2-4 players, recommended for ages 8 and up. With a playtime of 45-60 minutes, this game is a blend of abstract strategy and fun. It comes with a clear, easy-to-understand rulebook and solid, functional components. The artwork by Lukas Siegmon adds a fitting and appealing touch to the game.
👨👩👦 The game’s mechanics are straightforward, making it accessible for families. However, the real depth lies in strategic planning. Players face decisions like launching their balloon fleet now or expanding it further, and choosing between promising launch sites while considering how to revisit these spots efficiently.
🎯 A large part of Havalandi’s gameplay revolves around positioning your balloons strategically to form clusters while simultaneously blocking your opponents from launching their own large fleets. Each player also has access to three special balloons, including one that can be placed directly over an opponent’s balloon, creating new linking opportunities. The area around the pavilions turns into a strategic battleground as players race to place their balloons adjacent to them, scoring valuable points.
🍀 Luck plays a role due to the dice, which determines your balloon placement options. However, the game design cleverly mitigates this. Players can deviate from the direct line of sight using their own balloons in the same area, and one of the special balloons can be placed freely, offering a one-time opportunity to bypass the usual placement rules. These features ensure players always have viable placement options.
🔄 Havalandi’s replayability is high, thanks to its dual-sided game board featuring different path and pavilion layouts. This variation allows for diverse strategies in launching fleets and scoring pavilions. The endgame scoring cards further influence gameplay, encouraging players to consider these when placing their balloons.
👥 Regarding scaling for different numbers of players, the game adjusts three or four-player games simply by altering the number of balloons each player starts with. The two-player variant introduces a third color to occupy specific board spaces, serving as neutral balloons. From our experience, the game really comes to life and feels more interactive when you’ve got three or four players around the table. There’s just something special about the energy and the dynamic that unfolds with a larger group!
💭 Havalandi masterfully blends straightforward gameplay with elements of strategy and a pinch of luck, creating a harmonious gaming experience. It’s all about smartly placing your balloons to craft and deploy the mightiest fleet, guided by the whims of the dice, and balancing your own tactics while tactfully obstructing your rivals. This delicate balance is what makes Havalandi so replayable, constantly drawing you back in to refine your approach and expand your aerial empire.
