The biggest board game fair in the world, Spiel in Essen, Germany, has come to an end, and while we’re thoroughly exhausted, we’re also sad to see it go. It’s always a whirlwind of gaming, meeting friends, and discovering the latest in board game innovation. This year’s edition was packed with excitement, and we’ve got plenty to share about what made Spiel 2024 truly special.

A Well-Organized Experience
This year, the organizers set out to welcome even more visitors, while also ensuring that the fair remained enjoyable for everyone—from hardcore gamers to families looking for a fun day out. For the first time in Spiel history, they actually limited ticket sales to keep the event from getting too overcrowded. The result? Even with 204,000 visitors, the halls rarely felt as jam-packed as in previous years. Wider aisles and more open spaces meant that navigating through the 68,500 m² of playing area was a breeze.
The fair hosted 923 exhibitors from 52 countries, showcasing over 1,500 new games. Alongside the games, the creativity of illustrators, miniature painters, and upgrade creators brought so much life and color to the event. It was truly a celebration of all things tabletop!

Celebrating the Best: Deutscher Spielepreis
As tradition goes, the event kicked off with the press conference and the announcement of the Deutscher Spielepreis winners. This year’s highlights included:
- Children’s Game of the Year: Magic Keys by Happy Baobab and Game Factory
- Expert Game Category:
- 🥇 First Prize: Forest Shuffle by Lookout Spiele
- 🥈 Second Place: Skyteam by Kosmos and Scorpion Masque
- 🥉 Third Place: The White Castle by Devir and Kosmos
Congratulations to all the winners! We can’t see these games leaving anyone’s radar anytime soon!

A Fresh Take on the Novelties Show
The novelties show got a major upgrade this year, much to the delight of both publishers and the press. In previous years, the show was spread out over several days. This time, they condensed it into a single, longer day with a larger exhibition space, creating a more dynamic atmosphere where publisher representatives and designers were actively discussing their games with the crowd. This allowed publishers to present their games in all their glory without crowding each other out. The extra room made it easier for the press to capture those perfect shots and conduct interviews without stepping on each other’s toes.

Food, Fresh Air, and More Space to Relax
One of our favorite changes this year was the addition of outdoor seating areas and expanded food options. Food courts filled with food trucks and plenty of tables and benches provided much-needed rest stops for hungry gamers. Opening more gates between halls also brought a refreshing breeze that kept the venue comfortable, even when the halls were buzzing with activity. It’s clear that the organizers listened to feedback from past events and worked hard to make Spiel more enjoyable for everyone.

Leveling Up with the Spiel App
The updated Spiel app was a true game-changer. With features that allow you to sort games and publishers into categories, upload multiple tickets, and even plan your own virtual route through the fair, it quickly became an essential tool. The app had already been downloaded over 50,000 times at the start of the event, guiding visitors smoothly through the vast landscape of booths and activities. We were more than happy to have it on our phone as it led us straight to the publishers we work with, helping us bring you all the news on the latest releases.
Meeting the Minds Behind the Games
One of the things we love most about conventions like Spiel is the chance to connect with not just the publishers, but also the designers and artists behind the games we adore. Seeing the people who poured their creativity and passion into these titles, and having the opportunity to chat with them or get a game signed, makes the experience even more special. It’s a reminder that behind every game on the table is a community of dedicated individuals.

A Glimpse into the Future of Board Gaming
Spiel 2024 wasn’t just about celebrating new releases; it was also a preview of what’s to come. Publishers like Board & Dice, Asmodee, Blue Orange, Devir, and Iello shared some tantalizing hints about their upcoming games. While we got a sneak peek at a few titles, there are some surprises we’re keeping under wraps—we wouldn’t want to spoil all the fun for you! Let’s just say, if you’re a board gamer, the future looks bright and full of exciting new adventures.

Until Next Year, Spiel!
After a final stroll through the halls, a farewell cuddle with Meeps, and a look back at all the memories we made, it was clear that Spiel 2024 was a huge success. With a record-breaking attendance and countless games to explore, it’s no wonder this event remains the highlight of the year for board gamers worldwide.
We’ve already marked our calendars for next year’s Spiel from October 23-26, 2025, and we hope to see you there! Until then, may your board game shelves stay sturdy and your dice rolls stay lucky!
