How to Play Candy Hunters
The gameplay unfolds over six rounds, with each player taking turns to perform four specific actions in a sequential order. The first step involves placing a building tile on the board adjacent to an existing tile to expand the neighborhood. Following the tile placement, players engage in a “move ghost” action, where they choose a ghost and move it up to two spaces, potentially disrupting the plans of other players by scaring their kids to adjacent tiles.
The third step is where the magic happens: scoring patterns. Players check if the arrangement of building tiles on the board matches any of their pattern cards. Successfully matching a pattern not only allows a player to score it and earn points but also enables all players who have their player tokens on any of the tiles involved in the pattern to collect those tiles, thus gathering the candies represented by these tiles. Finally, players place one of their player tokens on any empty tile, preparing for future rounds and pattern formations.
As the game progresses to its conclusion, the final round omits the placement of player tokens, signaling a shift to scoring. Players then tally their points based on completed pattern cards, the variety and quantity of candies collected, and subtract points for any scare tokens they’ve accumulated. The player with the highest score emerges victorious, crowned as the master candy hunter.
Solo and Cooperative Challenges
Candy Hunters also offers puzzles as a variant of the standard gameplay, providing a solo or cooperative challenge. These puzzles are designed to enhance understanding of the game’s mechanics and develop strategic skills. Each puzzle sets a specific goal of reaching a certain number of points within a designated number of turns, adhering to a simplified version of the game’s rules.

Candy Hunters and Its Haunting Charm
Designed by Marek Chodań and Michał Gryń, Candy Hunters is the latest offering from Smart Flamingo, an indie board game studio based in Poland. The crowdfunding campaign for this game launches today, February 22nd, on Gamefound. Tailored for 1-4 players aged 8 and above, Candy Hunters promises a fun, puzzly experience that can be enjoyed in roughly 30 minutes.
Having had the opportunity to test a prototype sent by the publisher, I feel it’s premature to critique the rulebook comprehensively since it’s still a work in progress and expected to evolve. However, the components of the prototype are already quite impressive and provide a clear indication of the publisher’s vision. Particularly eye-catching are the wooden pumpkins and ghost meeples, which, alongside the fun and thematic artwork, are sure to captivate both kids and adults.
The game is easy to teach and play, making it accessible to even younger audiences. Its straightforward game structure guides players through various phases, seamlessly blending strategy with interactive elements. One of the game’s aspects we like the most is moving the ghosts to influence the game’s outcome, such as displacing player tokens from crucial tiles just before a pattern is scored, preventing opponents from acquiring the much-needed candies for scoring points at the end of the game.
Every turn creates a dilemma of pattern creation and ghostly evasion. It’s a game that captures the essence of Halloween fun, combining it with brain-teasing strategy that’s as engaging for adults as it is for kids. A true gem for those who love games that tickle the brain and the imagination.
Final Thoughts
Candy Hunters embodies unpredictability and thematic enjoyment, making it an excellent pick for family game nights. Its emphasis on tactical tile placement, pattern recognition, and the dynamic interplay with ghosts beautifully captures the Halloween spirit. This game is not only about having fun but also about engaging the brain and the senses, ensuring an enjoyable experience for all players.
