Venturesome invites players into an adventure where they gather a group of explorers to unearth ancient treasures. It’s not just about collecting artifacts, though. Players must be smart and cautious, as competitors are always ready to disrupt plans or even snatch away hard-earned treasures.

In Venturesome, gameplay unfolds over three distinct rounds. Each round sees players taking their turns, adding a character card to their growing expedition. As the expedition expands, so do the challenges. There comes a point when adding more cards isn’t an option. That’s when players must tackle a threat card, banking their accumulated cards for end-game scoring.
Every player’s move consists of three sequential actions:
🔀 Deployment: Choose a card and position it alongside your existing expedition cards. There’s a twist: you can’t play a card of the same color as one you’ve already played.
✨ Activation: Once your card is set, activate its unique ability. With seven distinct character cards, each offers a different advantage, whether it’s swapping cards with opponents or drawing additional cards from the pile.
🚫 Encounter: On occasion, players will confront a threat card. This typically happens when you’ve played all your cards or find yourself unable to make a move. When facing a threat, you’ll choose a card, act on its instructions, then set aside your remaining expedition cards for later scoring.
⏳ As each round concludes, the game resets. Old threat cards are discarded, new ones revealed, and players receive fresh character cards. The next round kickstarts with the player sitting next to the one who last confronted a threat.
🏆 After the dust settles at the end of the third round, it’s tally time! Players evaluate their gathered treasures, earning points based on card icons. Certain icons rack up more points than others, and the player boasting the highest score emerges as the victor.

Venturesome is a reincarnation of Michael Rieneck’s 2007 game, Palastgeflüster. While I haven’t had the pleasure of playing the original, I’ve heard its praises sung by many in the board game community. Drawing from the legacy of Palastgeflüster, Venturesome has enhanced its game mechanics and victory conditions, making it a worthy successor.
🎨 Published by Matagot and adorned with artwork by Paulina Opak, this Dutch/French edition I received from Asmodee Belgium is elegantly crafted. At its core, Venturesome is a set collection card game designed for ages ten and up. With a swift playtime of around 30 minutes, it fits seamlessly into the family game category. The iconography on the character cards is intuitive, making it straightforward for players to recall the varying abilities of each character.
👥 While the game supports 2 to 5 players, the dynamics at the 2-player count fell a bit flat for us. Venturesome thrives on player interaction, bringing out its charm when more players join the table. The gameplay may seem chaotic at times, especially with the “take-that” mechanics, but this unpredictability and interaction form the heart of the experience.
🃏 In Venturesome, strategy meets spontaneity. Players get to select from seven distinct character cards, each with their unique abilities. This diverse cast ensures that every round feels novel and unpredictable. However, like most card games, luck does play its part. An unfavorable draw could dampen one’s prospects, but that’s part of the thrill.
⏳ One of the game’s most interesting elements is how rounds evolve. Exiting a round early might seem like a disadvantage, but it can be quite the opposite. Those who choose a threat card first might find themselves with a leg up, potentially securing more expedition cards than players who stay in the round longer.
🔢 As the game wraps up, the scoring mechanism truly shines. It rewards players for both individual icons and collections of similar Artifacts. This two-pronged scoring strategy can set the stage for thrilling conclusions, keeping every player hooked until the end.
💭 Venturesome is a versatile game catering to casual gamers looking for lively interaction akin to party games, while also appealing to those with a strategic bent of mind. It’s a game that’s as interactive as it is competitive, making it a must-try for diverse gaming groups. If you’re in for some light-hearted fun or looking for a game that makes you think on your toes, Venturesome is sure to deliver.
